Getting a CSCS Green Card is a three-step process:
Complete a Health and Safety Course: You must pass a recognised Level 1 Health and Safety in a Construction Environment course or the CITB Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) course. These courses are offered in various formats, including online, in-person, or via e-learning.
Pass the CITB HS&E Test: You must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) or GQA Operatives test, which is a 50-question multiple-choice exam.
Apply for the Card: After completing the course and passing the test, you can apply for your CSCS Green Card through the official CSCS website. You will need to upload proof of your qualifications and pay the application fee.
For first-time applicants, the CSCS Green Card is valid for 2 years. If you continue working in a labouring role, you can renew it for five years by providing evidence of your employment, such as a signed letter from your employer.
The test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that cover health, safety, and environmental issues on a construction site. You have 45 minutes to complete it, and you'll need to answer 45 out of 50 questions correctly to pass. The test includes both knowledge-based questions and behavioural case studies.
If you fail the Level 1 Health and Safety course exam, you can usually retake it for a reduced fee. If you fail the CITB HS&E test, you must wait at least 24 hours before rebooking and may need to pay for a new test. It's recommended to use revision materials and mock tests to prepare before retaking the exam.
You must bring an original, valid form of primary ID with your full name, a recognisable photograph, and your signature. Acceptable IDs include a passport or a photocard driving licence.
